Bitcoin Price Holds $84K After Sharp $87,000 Rejection

The Bitcoin price is hovering near $84,300 on Thursday. A sharp rejection above $87,000 wiped out part of a strong weekly rally.

BTC had climbed about 12 to 13 percent in a week from near $75,000. On Wednesday it pushed above $87,000 twice. Buyers could not hold it.

How the Bitcoin price slipped below $84,000

Selling sped up once BTC broke below $86,000. The price fell about $2,000 in roughly 30 minutes. It touched an intraday low of $83,508.

Leverage made it worse. More than $230 million of crypto long positions were liquidated within one hour, according to market trackers. CoinDesk data put Bitcoin at about $84,295 late on Wednesday, New York time. That is around 3 percent lower than a day earlier.

The levels traders are watching

Analysts at UseTheBitcoin see $86,000 to $89,000 as heavy supply. On-chain data adds weight to that view. CryptoQuant places the cost basis of several holder groups near $88,000 to $90,000. Some of those holders may sell as they return to break-even.

CryptoQuant also puts an upper profit-taking band for short-term holders near $90,300.

On the downside, $80,000 to $82,000 is the key support. That zone was resistance before the breakout. Holding it keeps the recovery intact. A clean break below $80,000 could expose $75,000 to $78,000.

In the near term, $84,000 is the first line to defend. Bulls would need to reclaim $86,000 to $87,000 before another run at $90,000 looks likely.

The wider market mirrored Bitcoin. Ether slipped to about $2,670 after stalling near $2,786. XRP fell back to about $1.50 from $1.66.

The rally has come a long way since Bitcoin slipped below $80,000 earlier this month. Yet Wednesday’s drop is a reminder. Leverage cuts both ways, and fast.
