Bitcoin Slides Toward $84,000 As Iran Risk Returns

Bitcoin slides toward $84,000 on Monday, extending a sell-off triggered by President Trump’s rejection of an Iranian proposal to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The token traded at roughly $84,540 late Sunday, down from near $87,000 earlier last week, according to CoinDesk pricing.

Trump said Friday he would resume strikes after November’s midterm elections rather than accept Iran’s seven-day ceasefire offer, a statement confirmed by multiple mainstream outlets including NPR and Bloomberg. The rejection reversed a rally that had been building on hopes of a Hormuz deal, sending crude oil above $93 a barrel and the 10-year Treasury yield above 5%.

Liquidations mount despite record ETF inflows

Crypto-wide liquidations reached roughly $255 million on Friday alone, with around $63 million tied directly to bitcoin positions, according to data cited by CoinGape. The drop is notable because it cuts against an otherwise strong institutional backdrop: US spot bitcoin ETFs pulled in $2.39 billion for the week of September 21-25, a 2026 record, led by BlackRock’s IBIT fund with $1.16 billion.

That divergence suggests long-term institutional buyers are treating the dip as noise while short-term traders react to geopolitical headlines. Free Thought Daily recently covered bitcoin’s falling dominance as altcoins rallied, a trend now complicated by this week’s broader risk-off mood.

Traders are watching whether bitcoin holds support near $83,000. A break below that level, analysts say, could trigger further liquidations among leveraged long positions, while a rebound in Hormuz diplomacy could reverse the move just as quickly.
