British Consulate in Jerusalem Faces Closure as UK-Israel Row Peaks
The British consulate in Jerusalem is expected to close this week, escalating a diplomatic row between London and Israel. Efforts to avert the shutdown appear to have failed.
Reuters reported on 6 October that UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell visited Israel without stopping the closure. The deadline is expected to fall on Thursday.
How the British consulate in Jerusalem row began
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar ordered the consulate shut on 8 September. The consulate sits in east Jerusalem, territory Israel captured in 1967. Most countries do not accept Israel’s claim to the whole city.
Israel framed the order as retaliation. Britain and Western partners had imposed sanctions over settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Saar called British accusations “outrageous lies”.
Further measures against London
The closure was not the only step. Arab News reported Israel would also expel British diplomats monitoring the Gaza ceasefire. It banned British training for Palestinian Authority forces. It barred 12 British officials from entering the country.
Saar insisted foreign missions must work through accepted channels. He said Jerusalem is under Israeli sovereignty.
What Britain may do next
London has not stayed silent. Reuters reported that the UK is prepared to expel Israeli diplomats if the closure goes ahead. Such a move would deepen the rift further.
The politics matter. Israel votes on 27 October, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is promoting settlement expansion. A firm stand against Britain may play well at home.
For Britain, the consulate has long served Palestinians in east Jerusalem as well as British citizens. Losing it removes a rare diplomatic presence there. Security failures elsewhere in the region also keep governments on edge, as our Flydubai report explained.
Watch Thursday closely. Either the doors close and expulsions follow, or a last-minute deal appears. Neither side has signalled it will blink.
