Chinese AI Now Powers Up to 46% of US Enterprise Usage — The Quiet Takeover Nobody Voted On

Chinese AI enterprise adoption inside America just produced a number that should stop boardrooms mid-meeting. According to figures confirmed by CNBC this week, between 30 and 46 percent of enterprise AI token usage at US companies now flows to Chinese models.

Read that again. Nearly half of the AI work done inside American firms may already run on models built in China. No invasion, no announcement, no vote. Just engineering teams choosing the cheaper, open option, one API call at a time.

How Chinese AI enterprise adoption got here

The speed is the story. Z.ai’s GLM-5.2 recorded 80-fold customer growth in its first full week on a major deployment platform, the fastest single-model adoption of the year. Meituan’s LongCat-2.0, released under an MIT license and trained entirely on Chinese chips, went from curiosity to infrastructure in a fortnight, a shift this newspaper flagged when it launched. Open weights plus permissive licenses plus rock-bottom prices is a combination Western vendors currently refuse to match.

The countermeasures are already tangled in irony. Washington restricts chip exports to slow China’s AI, while American companies voluntarily route half their workloads to Chinese models. The UN’s new AI governance commission, which held its first meeting in Geneva this week, must now regulate a technology whose supply chain crosses the very rivalry it fears.

The question enterprises are not asking

Price is measurable. Dependency is not, until it hurts. Every workload moved to a foreign open model is a bet that licenses stay permissive, weights stay available and geopolitics stays out of the server room. This year has already shown how fast export rules can change in both directions.

None of this makes Chinese models villains. Competition is the point of open source. But a structural shift this large deserves a decision, not a drift. Right now, it is a drift, and it is accelerating.
