AI debt worries rattle Wall Street and chip stocks

AI debt worries hit Wall Street hard on Friday. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.14%, and the week ended as its worst since June, according to CNN Business.

The S&P 500 dropped 1.09%. Both indexes had hit record highs about ten days earlier. The VIX fear gauge rose more than 20% to above 20.

Neoclouds under the microscope

The focus fell on “neoclouds”. These firms rent out computing power and borrow heavily to buy chips. CoreWeave, backed by Nvidia, carries tens of billions of dollars in debt. Its bond yields have risen to levels that signal distress.

CoreWeave shares fell about 12% on Friday. They lost a quarter of their value over the week. They are down more than 65% from their peak after the March 2025 IPO. Analyst Gil Luria called such firms “the subprime tranche of the AI trade.”

Nvidia chief Jensen Huang voiced optimism about CoreWeave on Thursday. Investors were not reassured.

Chips and the wider squeeze

A semiconductor index fell 3.8% on Friday, its eighth straight daily decline. It lost 11.4% for the week. It remains up more than 50% this year, but sits over 20% below its June peak.

South Korea felt the shock. The Kospi fell 14.5% this week, its worst since 2008. SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics weigh heavily on that index. Reports that Chinese memory maker CXMT is advancing added to nerves.

Oil added pressure. Brent touched $110 a barrel for the first time since May. That stokes fears of inflation and more Federal Reserve rate hikes.

Why it matters beyond Wall Street

AI spending now drives a large share of stock market value. Chips alone make up about a fifth of the S&P 500. If lenders pull back, data-centre plans may slow. Local fights over those projects are already heating up, as our report on Satya Nadella’s call for an AI emergency brake showed.

Netflix reports on Tuesday. Tesla, Meta and IBM report on Wednesday. Investors want proof that huge AI investments are paying off. Read the full market account in CNN Business via KION.
