Bay of Bengal Conversation opens in Dhaka with Tarique Rahman

The Bay of Bengal Conversation has opened in Dhaka, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurating its fifth edition. Organisers say the three-day forum runs from 3 to 5 October. It takes place at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel.

The Centre for Governance Studies hosts the event. This year’s theme is “Geopolitics, Technology and Governance”. Both The Daily Star and Dhaka Tribune reported the Prime Minister’s inauguration.

Why the Bay of Bengal Conversation matters

The Bay of Bengal links South and Southeast Asia. Trade routes, energy supplies and security interests all cross it. Bangladesh sits at its head. That position gives Dhaka a natural role as host for regional debate.

The forum arrives at a delicate time for the government. Rahman took office in February after his party’s landslide election win, according to Malay Mail. Since then he has travelled abroad and returned to face a long domestic agenda. Our report on the Prime Minister’s return from the United States covered his most recent trip.

The chosen theme shows where regional anxiety lies. Geopolitics is the first word. Major powers compete for influence around the bay, and smaller states must balance their ties. Technology comes second. Artificial intelligence, data and digital infrastructure now shape economic strategy. Governance completes the trio. Reforms and institutions decide whether such strategies succeed.

Conferences do not settle disputes. They can still build habits of talking. Officials, researchers and business leaders meet face to face, and ideas travel. Bangladesh gains from being seen as a convener rather than a bystander.

The real test comes after the sessions end. Will the discussion shape policy on trade, connectivity and digital rules? Readers should watch for concrete announcements over the next two days. The organisers have not published a full list of attendees in the material available to us, so we will not guess at who may attend.

Free Thought Daily will report any notable outcomes from the forum.
