England World Cup Prediction: Why This Is Finally Their Year — By MRM
Prediction column by MRM. This is opinion, not reporting.
My England World Cup prediction is simple: they will win it. Not because of sentiment, and not because sixty years of hurt entitle anyone to anything. They will win it because, for once, the evidence points the same way as the hope.
Start with the quarter-final. England beat Norway 2-1 in extra time, and Jude Bellingham scored both goals. Great teams announce themselves in games like that. Norway were brave, brilliant and backed by a nation; Oslo gave them a heroes’ parade anyway, as we reported in our story on the Norway World Cup homecoming. England simply refused to lose. That stubbornness is new, and it is the single most important quality in tournament football.
The case behind this England World Cup prediction
Wednesday brings Argentina in the semi-final. Respect them: they are the reigning champions and they dispatched Switzerland 3-1 in their quarter-final. But this Argentina side is in transition, and England’s midfield is the deepest at the tournament. Bellingham is playing the best football of his life. The full-backs defend properly. The bench wins matches on its own.
There is also the scar tissue, which I count as an asset. This generation lost a World Cup semi-final in 2018 and two European Championship finals after that. Players learn more from finals lost than semis never reached. The panic that used to grip England in knockout football has gone; you could see it in extra time against Norway, when they slowed the game down instead of chasing it.
The winner faces Spain or France, who meet on Tuesday night in the other semi-final, a tie we covered in our Spain France semifinal preview. Either would start close to even against England. I still take England, on squad depth and on Bellingham.
Predictions are hostages to fortune, and football delights in embarrassing columnists. Fine. Put it on the record anyway: England, world champions, July 19, 2026. The wait ends in Arlington.
This is an opinion and prediction column by MRM. Match facts: FTD match reports and FIFA World Cup 2026 fixtures; England 2-1 Norway (aet), Argentina 3-1 Switzerland.
