Gaza Death Toll Passes 74,000 As Ceasefire Falters

The Gaza death toll has passed 74,000, Gaza’s Health Ministry said on Sunday, even as a nominal ceasefire remains in place. The ministry recorded 74,016 people killed and 175,068 wounded since the war began, figures the United Nations has generally treated as reliable. Israel disputes the ministry’s methodology and says the numbers are inflated.

Of the total, 1,145 Palestinians have died since a ceasefire took effect on October 10, 2025, underlining how fragile the truce has become. The latest fatality came from an Israeli strike in the Muwasi area of Khan Younis, which killed one person and wounded three, according to wire reports. Seven Israeli soldiers have been killed in the same period.

A ceasefire in name only

Israeli forces still control roughly half of Gaza’s territory. Talks on Hamas’s disarmament and a full Israeli withdrawal remain stalled, leaving both sides trading blame for near-daily incidents. Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya accused Israel of using the war “as fuel” for domestic politics.

That politics is now unavoidable. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a national election on October 27, widely framed as a referendum on his handling of the war and the stalled ceasefire. Analysts say any Israeli military escalation before the vote would carry heavy diplomatic risk, given growing European and Arab pressure for a durable settlement.

For Gaza’s roughly two million residents, the distinction between war and ceasefire has become largely theoretical. Aid groups continue to warn of shortages in food, clean water and medical supplies, even as diplomats insist the truce framework remains “alive.” Free Thought Daily has previously reported on doubts over whether that framework can survive contact with an election campaign.

With the vote five weeks away, the test for Netanyahu’s government, and for Hamas, is whether a ceasefire that keeps killing people can still be called one.
