Mike Leigh Wins Golden Shell, Calls It His Last Film
Mike Leigh Golden Shell honours capped a triumphant weekend for the 83-year-old British director, whose drama Tender Loving Care won the top prize at the 74th San Sebastian International Film Festival on Saturday. Leigh also shared the festival’s Best Screenplay award for the same film.
Too unwell to travel to Spain, Leigh sent a video message read at the closing ceremony: “I’m so sorry I can’t be with you. What a great honour it is.” He suggested the social drama, which follows social workers supporting vulnerable people, would likely be his final feature.
A career capped by three top European prizes
The win adds San Sebastian’s Golden Shell to Leigh’s collection of major festival honours, following the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1996 for Secrets and Lies and the Golden Lion at Venice in 2004 for Vera Drake. Few living directors have swept all three of Europe’s top festival prizes.
Kate O’Flynn won the Silver Shell for Best Leading Performance in the same film, while Swedish director Amanda Kernell took Best Director for Brace Your Heart. Javier Camara won Best Supporting Performance for 5 More Minutes, and the audience award went to Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s La Bola Negra, which had already won at Toronto and Telluride. Festival organisers also presented honorary Donostia Awards to Werner Herzog and Naomi Watts.
The 17-film competition lineup, running September 18 to 26, also featured Fatih Akin and Pablo Larrain. Free Thought Daily has covered the wider resurgence of European festival cinema this year, of which San Sebastian’s strong edition forms a part.
Leigh’s remarks about retirement drew tributes from across the industry, with several attendees calling his closing address one of the most emotional in the festival’s recent history.
