Oleshky ceasefire takes effect as Russia pauses strikes on Kherson

The Oleshky ceasefire took effect on Tuesday, 27 October, and Russia has paused strikes on Ukraine’s Kherson province.

Al Jazeera reports that the pause began at 01:00 GMT, according to Russia’s defence ministry. It is due to last through Saturday, 31 October, or longer.

What the Oleshky ceasefire allows

The pause lets an aid mission enter Russian-occupied Oleshky later this week. Negotiators said doctors, medicines, food and water would arrive first. Evacuation corridors would open afterwards.

The town sits on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River, opposite Ukrainian-held Kherson city. Its pre-war population was about 24,000. The United Nations says up to 2,000 people remain. Mines and drone attacks stop them leaving.

Outlook India reported that the White House put the number at 1,700 to 2,000 residents, mostly elderly, plus about 50 children. Civilian teams from both countries are to visit homes and arrange transport for people who want to leave.

Who brokered the deal

The White House announced the agreement on 23 October. It credited First Lady Melania Trump. Al Jazeera adds that Pope Leo was also involved. At that stage the White House said the pause would start on 29 October. Russia’s defence ministry says it began two days earlier.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed Melania Trump’s contribution and called it significant. He said the evacuation could take several days. Ukraine’s chief negotiator, David Arakhamia, said efforts would also aim for permanent humanitarian corridors.

Mistrust remains deep. Earlier ceasefire attempts have failed, and Al Jazeera did not report Ukraine’s official position on the deal. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a three-way meeting is planned for the first half of November. He said its timing depends on Russia.

The test is simple. Do convoys reach Oleshky, and do civilians leave safely? Another humanitarian crisis demands the same attention. See our report on Sudan drone attacks that killed more than 160.
