Pope Leo Lung Surgery Set for This Week After Nodule Found

Pope Leo lung surgery is set for the coming days, after the pontiff told the faithful on Sunday that doctors had found a nodule in his lung. He spoke during the noon Angelus blessing.

The pope said the nodule is small, well localised and was detected early. He said he accepted his doctors’ advice to operate, according to the Associated Press. The Vatican has not given an exact date. It says the operation will come early this week.

What the Vatican says about the Pope Leo lung surgery

The operation is expected at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where earlier popes were treated. The Vatican expects a recovery of about one week. Officials have suggested Leo may miss Wednesday’s closing Mass of a family ministry conference.

The pope is 71. This is the first major health event of his 17-month pontificate. He has no known earlier health problems. He plays tennis and swims each week at Castel Gandolfo, and he is not known to be a smoker.

No test results have been published. A lung nodule is a small spot seen on a scan, and doctors usually investigate each one. The Vatican has not said whether the nodule is cancerous. We will not guess at the cause.

Travel plans remain in place for now. Leo is still due to visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from 6 to 17 November. It is unclear whether the surgery will change that trip.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni voiced support. She said the calm way the pope spoke was reassuring. His predecessor, Francis, died on 21 April 2025 after a long hospital stay for respiratory problems. That history explains why any lung news from the Vatican draws close attention.

Whatever one thinks of the papacy, a leader’s health is a matter of public interest. Religious leaders hold real influence over hundreds of millions of people. Clear and timely information serves them better than silence.
