Solar Eclipse Over Europe Reminds Us Reason Beats Omens | Column
This is a column. A total solar eclipse sweeps over Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain today, the first seen from mainland Europe since 1999. For a couple of minutes, day will turn to dusk.
Crowds will gather with filters and cameras. Nobody will fear the end of the world. That calm is worth pausing on.
For most of history, a darkening sun spelled dread. Priests read omens into it. Kings feared it foretold their fall. Ignorance filled the sky with meaning it did not hold.
The solar eclipse as a triumph of reason
Today we know the timing to the second. Astronomers charted this path years ago, down to the coastal towns of Spain where totality lands near sunset. Prediction has replaced panic.
That shift is the heart of the freethought story. We stopped asking what the heavens wanted from us and started asking how they work. The answer proved stranger and grander than any omen.
Superstition has not vanished. Horoscopes still sell, and doom still trends online. But an eclipse is a clean test. The model says the shadow arrives at a set minute, and it does.
So step outside if you can, safely, and look up. What you are seeing is geometry, not judgement. That, quietly, is a kind of freedom.
