170 Targets in 48 Hours: America Doubles Down on Iran as Democrats Cry Illegal War
US Iran strikes second day: the phrase American officials hoped to avoid is now the headline. US forces hit roughly 90 more military targets on Friday, on top of the 80-plus struck the night before. That is at least 170 strikes inside 48 hours, all cast as retaliation for Iran’s continued attacks around the Strait of Hormuz.
The war that both sides paused in June is unmistakably back. It is now in its 132nd day, and the pause looks, in hindsight, like an intermission.
What the US Iran strikes second day changes politically
The escalation has cracked Washington’s silence. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer declared his party “united in our efforts to end this illegal war immediately and permanently” — the sharpest congressional language since the February air campaign began. A war entering its fifth month without authorisation is becoming a constitutional argument as much as a military one, as live coverage shows.
Iran says 14 people were killed in the first night’s strikes. Its response so far has reached toward Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar, states filled with millions of migrant workers with no exit from the crossfire. Oil, shipping insurance and fuel prices are climbing accordingly.
Where this leaves the deal
Officially, the 17 June interim agreement still exists. Practically, its survival now depends on whether either capital wants an off-ramp more than it fears looking weak. Two days and 170 targets say the answer, for now, is no. The diplomats who built the Doha channel have perhaps days to prove there is still something at the end of it.
Fact basis: ~90 additional targets on 10 July after 80+ on 9 July, ~170 strikes in 48 hours; war on day 132; Schumer quote; Iranian claim of 14 killed; Hormuz attacks as stated trigger (CBS News live coverage, WORLD, Go Local Prov, 10 July 2026).
