White House AI meeting: Trump hosts tech chiefs as warnings mount

The White House AI meeting on Tuesday 29 September puts President Donald Trump in a room with some of the most powerful people in technology. House Speaker Mike Johnson is also attending.

According to ABC News, the guest list includes Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, Google’s Sundar Pichai and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang. The talks come at an awkward moment.

Why this White House AI meeting matters

Several leading AI developers have recently called for slowing the development of ever more powerful systems. Reports name OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Microsoft and xAI among them. The worry is simple. Systems may become hard to control before the rules catch up.

The administration has signalled a different mood. ABC reports that Trump dismissed talk of AI destroying humanity as a hoax. It also reports that he told the UN General Assembly the United States rejects global AI regulation.

Speaker Johnson set out the line on Monday, according to Al Arabiya. He said the country does not need a moratorium. He warned that heavy regulation could cost America the race with China.

Johnson did not rule out a role for the Justice Department if things go wrong. He said the immediate need is transparency and some oversight. He also argued companies should largely regulate themselves.

The opposition view

Democrats disagree. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries says Congress should lean in boldly and responsibly on safety protections. His camp argues that voluntary pledges are not enough when the technology is moving this fast.

Industry itself is split. ABC notes that Zuckerberg has previously opposed collective slowdowns. He argues that each lab should set its own safety pace. Others in the room have pushed the opposite way.

No agreement had been announced when this report was filed. Nor is there any sign of a binding rule on the table. The meeting is best read as a test of tone. Will Washington treat AI safety as a real risk or as a political talking point?
